Pandemic Driving

Pandemic Driving

As the month of January ends and Lockdown continues, the wintery weather persists throughout the country. If you need to drive, on essential business during the pandemic, driving can be a challenge at this time of year. Here at A1 Clutches, we’ve got some tips that may be worth remembering to keep you safe in the cold and wet winter months.

Be visible

Forty percent of all collisions in the UK occur when it is dark. This statistic is from the Department of Transport. It is hard to see other vehicles when driving at night so please make sure that all the lights on your own vehicle are in good working order. Lights are for you to see and be seen.

Pedestrians and cyclists may not always be visible so do ensure that they can see you. Be patient too, they will be in a hurry if the weather is bad and may not concentrate on hazards around them.

Don’t be a tailgate driver

Stopping distances double on wet roads and increase tenfold when it is icy, so do keep your speed down and allow plenty of space between you and the vehicle in front. Don’t be a tailgate driver – keep well back from the vehicle ahead.

Essential items

If you do have to travel make sure that you carry the following essential items in your vehicle. Check the traffic and weather reports before you begin your journey and if in any doubt, stay home until conditions have improved.

  • Snacks and water and a flask with a hot drink
  • A blanket and warm clothing
  • Mobile phone charger
  • A torch and spare batteries or a wind-up torch
  • First aid kit
  • Jump leads
  • Screen wash, de-icer
  • Money
  • Reflective warning triangle

Remember, don’t drive if you don’t need to. The best way to stay safe in winter driving conditions is to avoid driving altogether but if you do have to make a journey make sure that you are prepared. During a pandemic you must not leave home or travel, including abroad, unless you have a legally permitted reason to do so. Check the government guidelines that apply to you in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and don’t travel with anyone else outside your household or social bubble.
