Suzuki Motor Corporation is a Japanese multinational corporation headquartered in Minami-ku , Japan – designing and manufacturing cars, off road vehicles, all terrain vehicles, outboard boat engines and more.
Suzuki sneaks into the world top ten manufacturers by size, being the 9th largest maker of automobiles. They manufacture their cars in 23 different countries, and have dealers in over 190 countries worldwide. They employ over 45,000 staff.
Established in 1909, by Michio Suzuki, the first Suzuki Company made weaving looms. In fact, weaving looms were the only things that Suzuki manufactured for the first 30 years of their history. It was not until 1937 that Michio started looking at manufacturing automobiles – for the burgeoning Japanese market. With the Second World War putting this expansion on hold, it was not until the early 1950’s that Suzuki started in earnest to make in-roads into the world of automobile manufacturing.
As with many Japanese brands (and indeed American or European) Suzuki started out manufacturing motorcycles. They were successful in this and held a large part of the domestic market; however in 1955 their attention turned to cars, with the launch of their front wheel drive, Suzulight – a car among others that was intended to speed up the motorization of the country.
Following the success of the Suzulight range, Suzuki continued to design cars including the Swift, the Alto, The Mighty Boy and the Escudo – a motley crew if ever there was one! Including the 954hp Escudo (Pikes Peak version) that dominated the hill climb event in 1996.
Motorcycles continue to be a big part of the Suzuki brand, with them being considered the 5th largest motorcycle manufacturers in the world – behind only Yamaha, Ducati, BMW and Kawasaki.
It is unusual to write a manufacturer description without mentioning a stakeholder ship by General Motors at some point during a brands history – and Suzuki is no exception. Although the original stake was only 5% and it has since grown to only 20% before being reduced to just 3% – so the Suzuki Corporation’s future is still largely in their own hands. It is still run by the children of the original founder, and it is still headquartered in the city it was founded in. A 20% stake was sold to Volkswagen in 2009 however this was bought back earlier this year.
In terms of motorsport, the motorcycle division of Suzuki far outweighs the achievements of the cars; however they have still found success in quote niche races such as the Paris-Dakar.
Suzuki invest heavily in research and development, and continue to be at the forefront of technologies surrounding electric vehicles (both motorcycle and car) and look set to remain so for the foreseeable future.
