Founded in 1994, smart Automobile (note the small s at the start of smart) is a division of Daimler AG, aimed at producing micro and mini cars and thus helping reduce the average emissions for the Daimler AG brands – including the main brand, Mercedes-Benz.

The FourTwo is the smallest car made by smart, and it was the FourTwo that was the vision of the Swatch (yes the watch people) to provide a car that could be easily customisable and delivered to the users’ specification. Originally signed up with Volkswagen, this deal was terminated in 1993, when their new CEO decided instead to focus on their own microcar that would use only 3 litres of fuel to travel 100km – this would become the Lupo 3L.

The directors set about getting smart signed up with another manufacturer, and after being turned down by brands including Renault, Fiat and BMW, smart found a partner in Daimler AG. Daimler had plans for a smaller Mercedes (the A-Class) and much would be taken from the relationship with smart when launching it later in the 1990s. The brand name is derived from the early work between Swatch and Mercedes-Benz, Swatch Mercedes ART – the logo is a letter C which stands for Compact and there is an arrow which stands for the forward thinking of the company.

Smart is marketed to over 45 countries now; production of the Smart FourTwo passed 1.7 million units in early 2014. Recently production has included an all electric smart FourTwo, achieving a range in excessive of 100km on purely lithium ion batteries.

Safety was a concern among early potential customers, as there were no crumple zones or basically anything between you and the impact of a crash. Smart get around this through the use of their innovative Tridion Safety Cell – which effectively encapsulates the passengers and removes the need for crumple zones. The difficult here would be that the energy from a crash would be passed on to the passengers, however this is mitigated by multiple airbags, a moving steering column and special pre—tensioning seat belts which were unique to the smart brand when launched.
