Skoda Auto, to give it the full title, is a Czech car manufacturer, founded in 1895 in Mladá Boleslav, Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). Original founded as Laurin & Klement, it was acquired by the Skoda Works Company in 1925. More recently, Skoda was entirely acquired by the Volkswagen Group in 2000, to become the brands entry level offering – however over the last decade the Skoda models have become increasingly upmarket to the point where they cross over with some of the VW models – but still at a more competitive price.

Skoda sold over 1.04million cars in 2014, accounting for over 10% of the overall Volkswagen output.

Although they held a poor reputation in the United Kingdom for much of the 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s, and indeed there is still a little stigma associated with the brand today, Skoda has shaken off the majority of the negative press and associations to become well established in the mid-market automotive sector. It is definitely worth pointing out that while Skodas were the butt of many a joke in the UK (along with the Lada brand) this was not typical of the wider European market, and there is no stigma associated with the brand in mainland Europe.

Skoda traded as Laurin & Klement until the 1925 takeover by the Skoda brand, launching over 25 models. Indeed the number of models did not cease too quickly from this point forward. Well known model names now such as the Favorit, Rapid and Superb were all originally launched in the 1930’s – the Octavia came along in 1959.

Following the Second World War, Skoda was became part of the communist Planned Economy, taking the ownership of the main manufacturing plant away from Skoda. In spite of this Skoda retained a good reputation for quality until the end of the 1960’s when the communist state began to creak – meaning that fewer resources were available to build let alone design cars.

Offering cars with brilliant technical specifications, that are extremely reliable and as well engineered as some of their German counterparts, Skoda is very much a brand to be taken seriously.

Skoda has been present in the World Rally Championship since 1999, running firstly the Skoda Octavia and more recently the smaller hatchback Skoda Fabia. Both have taken many stage wins and individual rallies, such as the 2001 Safari Rally, Rally Australia, Rally Catalunya and more.
