The renowned British car manufacturer was founded by Charles Stewart Rolls and Sir Frederick Henry Royce on the 15th of March, 1906. The company held the epithet as the “Best car in the World” as a result of their superior quality engineering and fine design principles. In addition to making the bets cars in the world, Rolls Royce also creates some of the finest jet engines to this day. Including the incredibly successful RB211 (featured on many aircraft) and the enormously powerful and capable Trent 900 – the only powerplant capable of powering the Airbus A380.

Anyway, back to the cars! Charles Rolls and Henry Royce would meet at the Midland Hotel in Manchester and agree to form the company Rolls-Royce – starting with a lineup of four cars – available with 10, 15, 20 or 30 horsepower. With the 30 horsepower unit being a six litre, six cylinder engine, and efficiencies were not great!

In 1906 Rolls-Royce created the Silver Ghost – the first ultra-luxury car by the marquee and a real yardstick for the rest of the world to be measured against. This was followed by the Phantom in 1925 and the Wraith in 1938 – both of which names have been resurrected by the current owner, BMW. Throughout the 1920’s and 30’s Rolls-Royce became synonymous with supreme luxury, and they were the only car for the upper classes to be seen in. This continued after the Second World War, with Rolls-Royce continuing to make the world’s finest cars – including later iterations of the Phantom and Wraith, the Silver Cloud, Silver Shadow and more.

Financial issues, caused largely by the amount of debt run up in the development of the famous RB211 jet engine caused the company to be nationalised in 1971 by the Heath government. The car business was sold off in 1973. In 1980 it was acquired by Vickers – having previously nearly owned 20% of the Vickers Group in 1966. In 1999, Rolls-Royce (then under joint BMW and Volkswagen ownership) would buy out Vickers PLC – it’s a bit messy and mixed up!

In 1998 Vickers looked to sell Rolls-Royce and the top two bidders were BMW and Volkswagen – BMW took the name and the RR logo, and VW got the Crewe manufacturing plant and ‘The Spirit of Ecstasy’ mascot and also the grille design ownership. After many protracted discussions BMW took sole control from 2003, with the last Rolls-Royce rolling off the production line in Crewe. VW Kept the plant in Crewe and it is where it manufactures cars under the Bentley brand which is owns. Rolls-Royce cars are now manufactured in Goodwood.

Since their sole ownership in 2003, BMW have created the Rolls-Royce Phantom, a £330,000 ultra luxury car that is truly the best car in the world. They have also made the slightly less expensive Ghost, Drophead Phantom and most recently the Wraith Coupe. Rolls-Royce is enjoying one of its finest periods of sales and continues to go from strength to strength.
