Proton Holdings Berhad is a Malaysian manufacturer, headquartered in Shah Alam , Selangor. Founded in 1983, the Proton brand was Malaysia’s only car brand until Perodua began trading 10 years later. Proton is an acronym for Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sendirian Berhad – which translates to National Automobile Company Private Limited in English.
The vast majority of Proton’s throughout the company history have been sold into the domestic market – and this continues to today. Of the 4million vehicles produced, over 3.5million have remained within the Malaysian market.
Featuring some designs of the time (neither inspiring or boring) Proton established themselves as a major manufacturer in the early 1980s, however in an attempt to expand beyond their home territory Proton struck a number of deals with overseas manufacturers in an effort to make cars suitable for different markets.
Proton partnered in design and technology with Mitsubishi in the mi 1980s and all Proton cars with the exception of the Tiara are based on Mitsubishi vehicles. Mitsubishi took a 30% stake in the company with the majority 70% remaining the property of Heavy Industries Corporation of Malaysia. The Mitsubishi shareholding reduced to 15.86% in 2004 with Khazanah Nasional (a strategic investment arm of the Malaysian Government) purchasing the shares from Mitsubishi.
Proton had an unsuccessful partnership with Citroen, launching jut one model (the Tiara) which was not met with critical or sales acclaim.
Proton partnered with Honda of Japan in 2012, reworking the Honda Accord platform to be the Proton Perdana – aimed entirely at the domestic market.
In terms of motorsport you could be forgiven for thinking that a relatively small player with a largely home market focus would not have achieved much. However, in 1996 Proton acquired an 80% stake in the legendary British motorsport brand, Lotus. Proton took sole control of the Lotus brand in 2003, which saw the handling characteristics of the Proton range improve enormously but also saw the birth of the Proton motorsport division.
Focused largely on rallying, Protons have secured victories in Asia-Pacific rally championship, the Intercontinental rally championship and the Production World Rally Championship, which led to their participation in the full World Rally Championship. Proton also have a number of good successes in the British Touring Car Championship too.
