Peugeot was founded as a family business way back in 1810, making coffee mills and bicycles. They diversified throughout the 19th century to eventually begin manufacturing cars in 1889 (a steam tricycle) and then the brand’s first internal combustion car in 1890, making it among the oldest manufacturers in the world still in business (Mercedes-Benz being the oldest).

Peugeot manufactured some of the most successful French cars of the 20th century and continue to produce easy on the eye family cars and sports coupes to this day. In the 1920 they cemented their reputation for quality with a range of cars including the Type 163, 177 and 601C  that placed Peugeot among the most sophisticated manufacturers of the day.

A pioneer in motorsports, Peugeot began in creating racing bicycles (they have won the Tour de France more times than any other manufacturer – although not recently!) and went from there. As the burgeoning ‘motorsport’ sector took off with daredevils from around the world seeking to take part in the early events, Peugeot was one of the pre-eminent manufacturers.

Entering their DOHC straight 4 engine in the French Grand Prix, it won by a mile (maybe not literally) against cars with much bigger engines – the revolutionary design meant the engine could run at much higher engine speeds (rpm) so did not rely on oversized engine capacity. With the same engine they won the 1913 Indianapolis 500 – a magnificent feat for a European brand.

Of course Peugeot is probably best known for two things – the first one which is the extraordinary heritage in rallying. Taking two World Rally Championships in the mid 1980’s and then another 3 in the French dominated (interspersed with a couple of Ford Focus wins!) in the early 2000’s.  Sports car and touring car racing also saw and see many wins for Peugeot.

The other thing that Peugeot is famous (or notorious) for is hot hatches, namely the 205 GTi, a superbly poised hot hatch from the 1980’s – riding a wave of boy racer interest, competing on the high streets of Britain with Nova SR, Fiestas XR2i and Renault 5s!

Peugeot is a manufacturer at the forefront of green technology and invests heavily in bringing concept vehicles to market – hybrids, all electric and even hydrogen models are in the works.
