Nissan Motor Company Ltd was founded in 1933 in Tokyo, Japan. The brand was an agglomeration of other car manufacturers, Kwaishinsha Motor Car Works and DAT Jidosha & Co, Ltd. Various name changes throughout the 1920’s eventually led to the Nissan brand being born. Manufacturing cars and commercial vehicles for the domestic market, Nissan grew quickly and established their place as one of Japan’s largest automotive companies. From 1934 Datsun (Nissan) began to manufacture a licenced version of the Austin 7. This led to both Austin’s greatest international licening ever and Datsun’s international growth. These were put on hold during WW2, but in 1952 the relationships was rekindled and Nissan began to use Austin designs again under licence – this continued until 1965. Since the 1960’s Nissan has created some of the most popular small and madieum sized cars in their domestic markets and their primary overseas markets- the USA and Europe. In 2015 they are recognised as the 8th largest car manufacturer in the world.
Their motorsports heritage is surprisingly short, with only rallying worth a mention, however they have always produced sports car having merged with Prince Motor Company in 1966 to create the Skyline range. Their current sports car (supercar?) is the Nissan GT-R – the successor to the Skyline range, but not part of it. It is one f the few production vehicles in the world that accelerates from 0-62mph in under 3 seconds, and is considerably cheaper than it’s Italian, German or French counterparts. It is also one of the fastest production cars around the Nurburgring Nordschliefe circuit with a time of 07:26:70 – which again puts it in the company of Ferrari Enzos, Lamborghini Aventadors and around 14 seconds quicker than a Bugatti Veyron! The GT-R NIsmo edition clocked 07:08:69 in 2015, the fifth fastest lap time ever!
Nissan has production facilities across the globe is well established as a top ten manufacturer.
