Moskvich is one of the largest car manufacturers that is almost wholly unheard of in the United Kingdom. A Russian manufacturer, Moskvich was founded in 1930 in Moscow, Russia. The brand produced many thousands of cars in the 1930s primarily for the domestic Russian market, that were of their own design. In 1947, following the Second World War, the USSR acquired a manufacturing plant in East Germany from which they created the Moskvich 400 – essentially a rebranded Opel Kadett (Or Vauxhall Astra as we would know it later) which began a production run that would last (in the guises of the Maskvich 401/402/403) up until 1965. Indeed the design hardly changed throughout this time or even after – although the designation changed. The Moskvich Aleko was the first model to veer from the Kadett platform. The Aleko, introduced in 1986 was a radical design departure for Mosvich, borrowing much from Lada (the UK had the import version under the Talbot brand) Samara. This continued in production until 1999.

The company dissolved in 2006, and while there was a partial recovery under the Russian arm of the Renault group in 2008, the brand name is now dormant – although it is owned by the Volkwagen Group, so there may yet be plans for more Moskviches in the future.
