Morgan is a family owned automobile company, founded in 1910 by Henry Frederick Stanley Morgan. The Malvern based company creates hand built sports cars with a level of luxury and sophistication long since disappeared from other manufacturer’s model range.
Morgan originally manufactured three wheeled vehicle, but do not confuse them with the Reliant Robin – in the case of Morgan the one wheel was placed at the back of the car with two wheels for steering up front. Back when they were first created, these vehicles did not attract tax the same way four wheeled vehicles did, and so they were direct competition for cars such as the Austin 7 but there was a clear financial advantage. Morgan’s first 4 wheeler, the 4-4, only appeared in 1936! However the four wheeled version would be the one to go on from this point and be what the brand was most known for.
Throughout the 1950s-1970’s the company was a competitor (albeit much smaller in size) with the likes of Jaguar in producing British sports cars with personality but also looks of a bygone era – the 4/4 referred to earlier was replaced by the 4/4 in 1955 and that model remains in production to this day!
However Morgan also moved with the times, and unveiled a new range of models in the 2000s – starting with the Aero 8. Unfortunately this car gained some unkind comparison to a crab that had been hit in the face, as its non-convention headlight styling certainly made it stand out from the crowd.
The Aeromax is a true design tour de force though, with the crab face at the front and a unique boat tail at the back – it is a truly beautiful car though.
And so, Morgan continues to create cars with a personality, in this era where performance is often heralded above soul – You can rely on Morgan to continue manufacturing their idiosyncratic cars, and you can bet there will always be a market for them.
