With origins dating back to 1917, Mitsubishi as an automotive manufacturer began life when Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co. Ltd (MSCL) released the Model A – Japan’s first series-production automobile. It was not a raging success though, being discontinued in 1921 after just 22 had been built! MSCL merged with Mitsubishi Aircraft Co. To become Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 1934. Following the Secon World War, Mitsubishi focused on manufacturing vehicles – both cars and buses. This continued with great success in the domestic market and Mitsubishi was established as major player in Japan.
Chrysler bought 15% of the company in 1971, giving the company a direct route to the under-explored US market. This saw production numbers rise rapidly and the company also grew sales in Australia as a direct result of this partnership. In 1980, Mitsubishi produce 1 million vehicle for the first time in its history, although by this point bankruptcy was plaguing Chrysler, who sold off their share of Mitsubishi. Their presence in the US though was already secured, and so they remain established as one of the top 20 manufacturers worldwide.
With the formation of Daimler-Chrysler, interest once again grew in the Mitsubishi Motor Corporation (MMC) and Daimler-Chrysler paid $1.9Bn for a controlling interest in MMC – creating the World Corporation that DC so aspired to.
As well as powering many boy-racers with their epic Mitsubishi EVO range of cars, they have also seen great success in motorsport – primarily in rallying – dominating the Paris-Dakar event in the 1980s and the World Rallying Championship in the late 1990s.
Always an innovative brand, Mitsubishi are currently heavily involved in the development of hybrid and electric vehicles – readying themselves for the future that the automotive industry will face.
