The mini was a small (very small) economy car made by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and its successors from 1959 until 2000 – an unbelievable production run testament to the classic design that meant the model remained relevant all the way through the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.

In 1999 the mini was voted the second most influential car of the 20th century, behind only the Ford Model T – The original mini was truly a legendary car.

It was among the first cars to adopt a transverse engine layout with front wheel drive – which allowed 80% of the floorpan to be used as passenger and luggage space. So even though the mini was minuscule outside the inside was… well it was still pretty small!

The tiny vehicle length though, combined with the low centre of gravity and the wheel on each corner gave the mini go-kart like handling.

Produced in huge numbers around the world during the 41 year production run the mini was built in England, Belgium, New Zealand, Spain, Chile, Portugal, Yugoslavia, South Africa and more.

Available in many variants the Mini was perhaps most iconic in its Cooper guise. The Mini Cooper S went on to huge success in the British and European Saloon and Touring Car Championships. As well as many rallies, including 3 wins in the Monte Carlo Rally in the 1960s.

By the time production ceased, over 5.38 million minis were sold, making it the most popular British car ever made.

Since 2000 Mini, now styled as MINI, has been wholly owned by BMW. With a new lease on life, the MINI has got a lot bigger, but still has the fun aspect and is going on to achieve huge global popularity. The MINI was joined by the Cooper, the Cooper S, Cooper Works, the Clubman, The Coupe and the Countryman – the first 5 door MINI produced by BMW.
