Automobili Lamborghini SpA is an Italian manufacturer or supercars and hypercars. Lamborghini also used to manufacture Sports Utility Vehicles and actual tractors also, but now they focus solely on luxury, high performance road cars. Founded in Sant’Agata Bolognese in 1963, by Ferruccio Lamborghini, the original company aim was create a refined grand tourer to compete with those made by Ferrari. Indeed the company’s first models were noted and praised for their refinement mixed with power and performance. In 1966 Lamborghini set the blueprint for super car production with the Miura. Arguably one of the most beautiful cars ever created, the Miura was the first super car and it was the first to have a mid mounted engine powering the rear wheels – the true layout for any supercar.

Ferruccio Lamborghini decided early on that providing factory support for a racing team, whether in Formula One or otherwise would be an unnecessary drain on company resources – and so motorsport history is not shot through with successful Lamborghinis the way it is with Ferraris. Besides a brief stint providing the engines for Lotus in 1990, and a few others such as Minardi, Ligier and Modena, Lamborghini has achieved more success in GT racing.

Following the 1973 world financial downturn, Lamborghini was sold. It changed hands several more times and the Mimran brothers oversaw significant expansion in the 1980s. The Mimran brothers sold Lamborghini to the Chrysler Corporation in 1987. Chrysler sold it to a Malaysian investment company in 1994, who sold it to the Volkswagen Group in 1998. Lamborghini remains under ownership of the VW Group and is in the control of the Audi subsidiary.
