Founded in 1992, AM General began selling a civilian version of the M998 Humvee vehicle. The brand name was Hummer, and the first model was called the Hummer H1. In 1998 General Motors bought the brand, and expanded the product range to include the smaller (but still huge) H2 and H3 models. During the economic downturn questions were asked by GM about the viability of Hummer and during the 2009 bankruptcy of GM, the brand was put up for sale.

Chinese manufacturer Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company appeared to have bought the brand but the deal was later revealed to have not gone through. The final Hummer rolled off the production line in May 2010 and the company was closed down. One reason sales were poor was the shocking economy of the vehicles – weighing in at almost 3 tons the H2 returns around 17mpg on the motorway and just 12mpg around town… Frightening, but then that could be expected from such a massive vehicle.
