Founded in 1946, in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony, Germany, Volkswagen is the bestselling brand of the Volkswagen Group which was created in 1975 to group together several (now many) brands under the one company – it is now the second biggest manufacturer of cars in the world, behind Toyota.

Volkswagen was technically founded in 1932, by the German Labour Front, and it was tasked with creating literally a Volks Wagen – that is People’s Car. This was to become the VW Beetle, and although there were several variations of the Beetle, this proto-company did not make any other models.

Indeed it wasn’t until 1961 that VW Really got started in making new models, with some new hatchbacks, saloons and other but nothing to really make a mark in the domestic or foreign scenes. When they did eventually get round to it however, and it took until 1974, they did it is some style – launching the Golf.

The Golf would go on to become the company’s second best selling model (everything will be second to the Beetle for a long, long time) but it also brought the company up to date with the demands of an increasingly affluent market – oil crisis etc aside…

Following the Golf (after 25 years of almost stagnation) in quick succession were the Jetta, the Scirocco, Golf Cabriolet and the Caddy – a pick up.

With the golf now firmly established as a car with a range that included family hatchback through to snarling (almost)sports car the brand had a wide audience and built great brand loyalty through the quality engineering which meant their customers experienced less failures and spent more time on the road.

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 saw a unified Germany look its automotive sector to help steady the economy which with BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen is easier to do than with some of the lesser known East German brands.

VW established global dominance in the 1990’s through exporting and distributing in over 140 countries! Throughout the 1990’s and 2000’s VW acquired various brands and brought them back to the peak of their powers – Lamborghini and Bugatti being two notable examples. VW Also owns Audi, so that gives another example of the scale of offering available from the Group.

In motorsport, Volkswagen is truly a global giant – involved in events as varied as the Paris Dakar rally to Formula 3, from the World Rally Championship to the European Truck Racing circuit. With countless victories on their palmares, there is also the small matter of Porsche being a controlled brand within the group which puts their motorsport heritage into the stratosphere.

Volkswagen makes beautiful cars that their customers can rely on and that will still be running perfectly well in 100,000+ miles – this is what establishes them as a truly dominant global power in automotive manufacturing.
