Vauxhall is an English automobile manufacturing and distribution company and an affiliated company of Adam Opel AG – both being wholly owned by General Motors. The company sells cars and light commercial vehicles under the Vauxhall marque. Vauxhall has been one of the top two selling brands in the UK for over 20 years.

The original Vauxhall company was founded in 1857 by Alexander Wilson, and they began manufacturing cars in 1903. GM acquired the brand in 1925 and having previously been associated with the luxury market sector GM saw that Vauxhall was repositioned to provide more competitively priced automobiles to the masses. Since the 1980’s most Vauxhall models have been identical to the Opel models, the two sharing the same design bureau.

Vauxhall has major manufacturing facilities in Luton and in Ellesmere Port, producing almost 200,000 cars per year between them with a combined staff of just 2,700. A high proportion of UK sold vehicles are actually built in the Opel plants around Europe in Poland, Spain and Germany.

Following the acquisition by GM, Vauxhall spent the next 5 years figuring out which sector it would target, before finally landing with Vauxhall Cadet, a smaller/shorter, low cost car aimed at the lower end of the market.

Vauxhall manufactured over 7,000 tanks during the Second World War, and from 1945 firmly had its place in the market for the lower cost, reliable cars that would help motorize the United Kingdom, keeping pace with the other European economies.

By 1967 Vauxhall had earned the Royal Warrant, supplying vehicles to the Queen – The Prince of Wales would also add his warrant in 1994.

The 1970’s and 80’s saw tremendous upheaval in the world, with the oil crisis, recession and changing working and living conditions and standards for many of the population. With various brands going bust and being abandoned by owners (such as GM) it was by no means certain that Vauxhall would survive as a brand. However Vauxhall took the chance to pick up the market share dropped by their competition, and through clever management and attractive designs coupled with intelligent pricing strategies they were catching up to the big two in the UK market – Ford and British Leyland – by the end of the 1970s.

The 1980’s saw a range of cars form Vauxhall that managed to blend family friendliness with sports appearance and performance – notably the Astra and the Nova. The 1980’s also gave the brand the increased public perception of being a brand they could trust – not like the Vauxhalls of the late 60’s and early 70’s which were often derided as unreliable rust buckets. Instead the brand was now one to be proud of driving, and it would reward the driver with a very sporty experience too.

During the 1990’s and 2000’s Vauxhall cemented their place at the top table of UK car brands, appealing to the mass market just beneath the BMW/Mercedes/Audi sector. Ford was now their only serious competition and the two would trade positions one and two and also take home a lot European Car of the Year awards for their various models.

Since 2010 the Vauxhall brand has aimed their vehicles at a younger audience, with the Adam being an ideal example of a car targeting at young people. Personalisable with over 1,000,000 options the Adam was created to appeal to the iPhone generation, with integrated ‘Intellilink’ stereo and touchscreen display to communicate directly with the owners phone.

In motorsport, Vauxhall has competed at the top of the podium in the British Touring Car Championship (and European equivalent more recently) since the 1970s, taking home many race and Championship victories.
