The country has been battered with stormy weather recently, with Storm Arwen and Storm Barra making their presence felt as high winds, and heavy rain wreaked havoc across some areas of the country. Such turbulent conditions create difficult driving. On our blog this month, we’ve listed some valuable tips on coping with the weather if you are out and about in your vehicle.
Firstly, listen to the weather reports and if you don’t need to travel, stay home. Don’t make any unnecessary journeys. If you do, take your time. Keep calm and slow down.
• Ensure your windshield wipers have a good supply of fluid in the reservoir and check your battery life.
• Are your lights clean? Turn your headlights on and give vehicles around you plenty of space.

Keep your headlights clean
• If you must be on the road, grip the wheel of your vehicle firmly with both hands to gain better control. Look out for larger vehicles that are at an increased risk of hydroplaning.
• Tyres deflate when the air cools, so make sure all tyres are inflated correctly and have enough tread to work efficiently in demanding driving situations.
• Avoid puddles – shallow looking pools may be deep! Drive around it or find an alternative route, don’t take any chances.

Avoid hydroplaning!
• If you can’t see more than a few yards ahead, pull over. Find shelter in a safe spot, not on a large stretch of road.
• Wet roads are slippery, and it takes longer to stop. If approaching a red light, traffic or a junction, start braking earlier and more slowly to avoid sliding, reducing the change of hydroplaning.
• Avoid wooded areas. Flying debris can damage your car.
• Don’t be distracted by talking on the phone, playing music or texting. You need to be fully alert if you drive in stormy conditions. It’s a good idea to listen out for up-to-date weather reports on your radio.
Remember that the safest form of driving is not to drive if you are worried about bad weather. Most importantly, ensure that your vehicle is well maintained before you travel. If you have any doubts about the clutch or gearbox, call A1 Clutches today for a free check.
