Mercedes Benz is the oldest car manufacturer still in business today, Karl Benz created and patented the world’s first petrol-powered car. Karl Benz worked with some other familiar named gentlemen – Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach to produce the car, which was an adaptation of a stagecoach but with a petrol engine fitted instead of being horse drawn.

The name Mercedes was a Daimler brand, arising in 1901, and the firm was known as Daimler-Benz until 1926 when it was changed to Mercedes-Benz.  The brand is one of the best known and largets in the world, competing the Big German 3 – with BMW and Audi. Manuafacturers of premium and luxury vehicles primarily, the firm also specialises in creating performance vehicles, super cars and 4×4 (and indeed 6×6) capable vehicles – as well as a range of vans and lorries.

Creator of some of the most iconic vehicles, throughout the last century and this to date, Mercedes-Benz stand by their motto – “Das Beste oder Nichts”which translates to “The Best or Nothing”. Currently with a huge model range, Mercedes-Bens produces a vehicle for just about all product sectors.

With a huge heritage in motorsport, including Formula One, Le Mans, the Mille Miglia, Indy Car, Touring Cars and even the Paris-Dakar – Mercedes have their place in the upper echelons of motorsport manufacturers. Current Formula One Constructor World Champions, they look ominously likely to retain their title this year and a challenger in future years is not obvious yet.

Mercedes-Benz is a brand built on the adoption of technical innovations. Throughout their lifetime as a business, Mercedes-Benz has been the first to bring a whole suite of technical advances to their cars – examples include:

The internal combustion engine itself – in 1886
Safety-Cell construction with front and rear crumple zones – in 1951
Anti-Lock Brakes – 1979 on the S-Class, 1980 across the range
Airbags – 1981
Electronic Stability Programme – ESP  braking assist – As with all of the other innovations, this started out life in the S-Class (1987) before being adopted across the range.

Mercedes-Benz does not make a huge fuss about the technical innovations and huge strides it takes forward in promoting passenger safety – instead it openly licences them out to competitor brands, thus introducing the new levels of safety across the automotive world for the benefit of customers of other brands too.

Mercedes-Benz also built the first Robot Cat in the 1980’s – and in 1987 created a robot car that drove from Munich to Copenhagen and back again, completely unassisted by human control.

The innovators among the World’s car manufacturers, Mercedes-Benz continue to lead the way.
